I have asked the Lord for one thing—this is what I desire! I want to live in the Lord’s house all the days of my life, so I can gaze at the splendor of the Lord and contemplate in his temple.
The psalmist asks the Lord for “one thing”: “to live in the Lord’s house all the days of my life.”
The purpose for the request is to “gaze at the splendor of the Lord and contemplate in his temple.”
Isaiah conveys a similar experience with these words: “‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty'” (Isaiah 6:5 NIV).
“Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:2 NIV).
