August 22—A Pearl for Today
“God calls his angels ‘messengers swift as the wind, and servants made of flaming fire.’… But angels are only servants. They are spirits sent from God to care for those who will receive salvation” (Heb. 1:7,14 NLT).
“If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will give His angels charge concerning You;’ and ‘on their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone’” (Matt. 4:6).
SILENCE: THE FATHER AND SON’S LOVE
The love of Christ and His choice to die on the cross for sinners overwhelms us. On one Good Friday, our daughter Donna contemplated the lyrics of the song, “He Could Have Called 10,000 Angels.” She realized how this song speaks of God the Father’s great love for us. He could have sent 10,000 angels to stop His Son’s agony and suffering. When we read the verses above, we understand that angels are servants sent from God. How difficult it must have been for God the Father not to send His angels to stop the suffering of His Son. For the same reason, His Son did not call for these angels. It was all for Love!
FOR LOVE
Oh, Jesus, Jesus,
Why were you born
In a lowly manger bed
Rather than with a crown of gold
Upon your head?
For Love!
Oh Jesus, Jesus,
Why did you live
With such simple folk,
When in ages past the world was created
When You spoke?
For Love!
Oh, Jesus, Jesus,
Why did you die such a hateful death
As a lowly Jew,
When you could have called a million angels
To rescue You?
For Love! —Pearl O. Anderson
