August 31—Tears
The word for today is tears.
“And He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4).
“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Ps. 30:5).
“My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God” (Job 16:20).
“I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears” (Ps. 6:6).
“Hear my prayer, O Lord, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were” (Ps. 39:12).
“My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’ (Ps. 42:3).
“Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll—are they not in your record?” (Ps. 56:8).
“Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him” (Ps. 126:5-6).
Prayer: Lord, Your words to Josiah are words I, too, long to hear: “‘Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you,’ declares the Lord.”
