The word for today is compassion.
“‘But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, HE FELT COMPASSION, and came to him, and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, “Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you”’” (Luke 10:33-35 emphasis mine).

“And seeing the multitudes, HE FELT COMPASSION for them, because they were distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest’” (Matt. 9:36-38 emphasis mine).

Compassion is the fruit of a deep hurt and a longing to help others. It is the fruit of a holy walk. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Prayer: Father, fill me with the compassion that caused Jesus to empty Himself, taking the form of a servant, and humbling Himself to the point of death on the cross for me.
